Ty Brueilly debut short film ‘Shucks'

As Ty Brueilly’s ‘Shucks cinematic world’ expands into it’s current ten title progression, more and more attention is being brought to his 49 minute black and white, silent but scored film, ‘Shucks’; the film that started it all in 2017 at the Sunset Theatre.

TCL CHINESE THEATRES – February 18, 2025

6925 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, CA

Asheboro, NC native filmmaker Ty Brueilly released his debut film, ‘Shucks’ on Veteran’s Day weekend 2017 at the historic Sunset Theatre. Since then he has expanded the lore and characters he created into a ten title cinematic world, with three additional installments in different phases of production. With the success of many awards and numerous theatrical screenings of the most recent, ‘At A Distance: 7eventh Sirkle’, many people are turning their attention to where it all started, that original installment, ‘Shucks’.

“With such an experimental approach, I really had no idea what kind of reception the film would get. It’s a silent black and white film, but it does have a score, which was a personal form of empowerment as I composed it. The film has heavy symbolism with addiction awareness as it’s main focus and Dante’s Divine Comedy as the inspiration, but it doesn’t slap you in the face with it. It’s hidden at times. There is also tones of suicide awareness and PTSD awareness, which in a bold move from me, was the reason I personally and purposefully chose Veteran’s Day weekend for the premiere.

So with all that said, I was nervous about how it was going to be received, yet fast-forward to 2025 with the ten titles (not sequels, but installments)  that the ‘Shucks cinematic world’ has evolved into, it obviously has an audience and the icing on that cake, is that after those titles have been shown in nearly 200 film festivals in the world with an accumulated 100+ awards in a dozen different categories, ‘Shucks’ is getting more momentum and exposure, finally having it’s long awaited and highly anticipated Hollywood Premiere at the world famous TCL Chinese Theatre! People are seeing the newer stuff and getting curious on where it all started at, which is a beautiful thing.”

Film critic Jessie Hobson of Cinedump said of ‘Shucks’. “Ty Brueilly’s debut film, Shucks, is an ambitious and surreal experience that challenges conventional storytelling through its experimental approach… The film’s narrative is cryptic yet engaging… reminiscent of A Clockwork Orange’s infamous conditioning scenes, Now, Shucks is set to make its Hollywood premiere at the world-famous TCL Chinese Theatre in February—a testament to its enduring appeal.”

Brueilly follows up with, “I noticed a resurgence in interest with ‘Shucks’ after the 2022 wide theatrical release of ‘Skinamarink’ because people were looking for similar films and stumbled across it because there aren’t many like this, with that said, I feel like this ‘Shucks cinematic world’ has such great potential due to the substance of its story mixed with my approach on filmmaking, which is a total homage to the early days of motion pictures, plus it has a main “villain” that could extend appeal…I mean it really can become something profound if it continues to get the support and admiration of open-minded audiences that are willing to spread the word on it, ones that have an appreciation for the artform of films and are in tune with the culture of it all. I hope I can continue to have the opportunity to reveal more about the background and lore of the characters and stories I created until my thinktank runs dry. I have been fortunate to build a network and fanbase in the Hollywood/L.A. area these past two years, so for ‘Shucks’ to finally get it’s right of passage there is a monumental moment for me. However I am both nervous and excited about it, since ‘Shucks’ is the longest run-time of the ten titles, with 49 minutes, it will be a true test to see if the audience is captivated enough and engaged enough to watch it in it’s entirety, by the time the screening is over I will have learned a valuable lesson on how to proceed with the rest of this cinematic world.”

Following its initial theatrical screening in 2017,  ‘Shucks’ had a two year run on Amazon Prime with much streaming success and was the main source of how it reached film festivals and audiences, being invited to the Oaxaca Film Festival was it’s defining moment . Currently rated 7.6 out of 10 on IMDb, the film has been called “eerie meets elegant” “beautifully brain-teasing” and “intense artistry.”
